Opinion: Dialogue will do nothing for America

In the wake of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, there has been a wide uprising calling for ‘more respectful political dialogue in our county’

Sorry America, but that is not going to help anything.

Political discussion, contrary to popular belief, is not dead in our country; it is actually more prevalent than ever. Platforms such as X, Facebook and Bluesky give access for those of opposing parties to challenge one another's beliefs openly. Usually allowing those throughout the country to discuss debated topics in an instant, at any time. We have enough discussion.

The problem lies in the fact that these issues are not malleable in their ideological pursuits, not solvable by compromise or by some grander form of understanding. The opinions of our modern political extremes lie too far apart for them to ‘talk it out’.

Republicans, with a conservative view of a liberal tradition, discussing with a progressive of the same tradition, is of the past. No longer are our parties discussing different means to the same goal. Instead of the common belief in our system and institutions, with a caveat of how these institutions should operate, we are now in a world where these institutions are uprooted and thought of as rotten to the bone.

Asking Americans of political extremes to ‘discuss it out’ is the same as asking Gorbochev and Reagan to politely discuss how to make a communist, totalitarian state work alongside a liberal, capitalist democracy. There is no compromise here; there is opposition, where one must win.

The political right is of the belief that LGBTQ+ individuals cannot fit into the traditional family structure, and allowing them into the public square is a plague on our institutions and morals.  The right believes in the traditional view of the importance of family -including the importance of differing gender roles-, the church, and marriage. Allowing mentally ill people -the people who genuinely believe they are of a different gender- rule how our society acts and defines them is beyond what Republicans are willing to secede. To put it bluntly, conservatives view these ideals as a threat to the core of their beliefs, threatening what they stand for and threatening their family values.

While the political left believes that they should have the liberty -or license, depending on your personal beliefs on liberty- to do as they please and ‘love who they love’. They believe these peoples should have the right of marriage, and the right to demand others to respect their ‘preferred pronouns’. They are unwilling to negotiate on these terms as they see themselves as valid in their love, and they genuinely believe in transgenderism. Often denouncing the church and the institutions held near to further their own selfish desires, but uprooting what the other side deems most important.

Do you see the problem here? One believes these ideals are plagues and a death to their morals and social norms; the very norms that hold our country in place. The others see their ideals as of such importance that they have the right to demand to be called what they prefer. What will talking do to mend this? It definitely isn’t going to change either side's view of what is right and just, as they are so opposed to what is morally correct.

The only way to inhibit change from our current political hate and turmoil is to eliminate one side; these ideas as they stand cannot co-exist, they are simply diametrically opposed.

I would call on the left to ask themselves, why is there so much violence in our own corner? Ponder the consequences of being selfish, wanting the immediate desires and denouncing the institutions of our given society, and how that will affect our morals. There is now ambiguity in what is right and wrong; that is why we see violence. When there is no longer a clear definition of right and wrong in killing babies, marrying the same gender, pretending you’re a gender you’re not, and pumping innocent, naive, children full of dangerous drugs; why wouldn’t violence be the next thing to normalize -especially when they make you mad, taking away your selfish license.

This sexual orientation problem describes more than it seems; it describes what we value, who we are, and the lives we want to lead. However, it is not the only ideology of the left that is uncompromisable. The rising belief in socialism, abortion, and hatred of the church -and with the church, the denunciation of the first amendment and free speech. It is one system pinned against another, no longer one ideology against another.

The hope for this country doesn’t end in war, but it may. If the last election shows us anything, it’s that people are tired of walking on their tip-toes around these selfish people. The people of the left are not all encompassed in this ideology, only the radical ones. Normality will endure, our ethics and values will endure, and we will dump this crazy radical ideology -Or else it could be a dark time in America to get there. We will win.
